This weekend, I had the opportunity to discover some traditional Mexican soups I've often read about but never had! On Friday, I had a fantastic Albondigas for breakfast from La Espiga de Oro in San Francisco. This big bowl of soup was chocked full of tasty meatballs and fresh vegetables. Served with hot, fresh corn tortillas, this was the perfect start to the day. The bowl is so big it can feed 2 starving adults...
On Saturday, I tried a delicious Birria (goat) soup from one of my old time favorite Mexican restaurants in South San Francisco, La Nueva Perla. This place has some of the most legit Mexican food in the area. Everything is made fresh in house including the corn tortillas- which I believe are THE BEST EVER! On weekends, La Nueva Perla offers several special soups including the Birria, Menudo, Barbacoa (sheep) and Pozole. Surveying the room, it looks like these soups all share the same rich tomato/chili broth loaded with vegetables and meat of choice. Accompanying the soup is a red tray filled with garnishes including: lemon, diced onion, cilantro, red pepper flakes, oregano, radishes and cabbage. My bowl of Birria was chocked full of meat and perfectly done vegetables. Adding the garnishes takes the soup to another level. I can't even describe it. You'll just have to try it for yourself.
